Found this young up-and-comer Sharkf3ng through ThisSongSlaps.com and boy am I glad I did. His most impressive and recent track, a mashup entitled “Decamash ( Sharkf3ng Mashup),” really shows off his ability to take the best parts of todays EDM hit songs and blend them.
Mashups are tricky becuase they can sound poor if done incorrectly. Sharkf3ng took the risk and it’s payed off big time, his last mashup has reached over 60,000 plays. Quite a triumph for a Virginia based 18-year-old still in high school!
Sharkf3ng aka Ryan Feng was kind enough to share a few words with me about his EDM production diversity, his musical beginning, and future plans!

Are you still in high school? What is it like being in that type of environment while experiencing beginning success?
Yes, I’m still in high school, but I’m graduating very soon in June. I go to a very academically rigorous school that puts a lot of focus on science, technology, math… etc, so pursuing music, specifically producing electronic dance music, is something that sets me apart and makes me unique. My school is generally very supportive of my music and my goals, so this fosters a nice environment for me to keep pushing and getting better.
How did your musical interest aspire?
I’ve been a piano player since I was 6. I’ve played percussion for 7 years, and I was just really into techno music in middle school. I started producing electronic music when high school started for fun, but it didn’t get serious until around Junior year. I look up to a ton of artists for inspiration, but in particular I’m a huge fan of Porter Robinson and Madeon for being so talented as teenagers.

You’re soundcloud tracks are very diverse but all of them contain Sharkf3ng originality. What do you aim for when creating your sounds? Do you like some genre’s more than others?
I would absolutely HATE, to be trapped by a certain genre, or feel mentally limited as to what style “I should” produce. I start every song from scratch, and just write whatever I feel like writing in the moment. I’m still developing and searching for sounds that will ultimately define me as an artist, but while I’m still growing, I think it’s important to keep an open mind, not be afraid of exploring other tempos beside 128, and writing what I want to at the time. I love and appreciate almost every single genre of electronic dance music, which is why I could see myself producing any genre in the future.
What software do you use to remix, mashup, or create originals?
I used FL Studio up until last year, then I switched to Ableton and took advantage of the 25% off and upgrade to Live 9 deal. You hear this a lot but it’s still so true… The software you use really doesn’t matter… It’s all on how you use it!

Where are you taking it from here? Any plans for a EP release, tour dates, anything like that?
Right now I feel like I’m at a point where with just a little more effort, I can really take my music to the next level to get noticed… and that’s what I’ve been aiming to do recently. I tend to take my time on projects, starting and stopping a number of ideas… but I think it’s important to understand that music is art, and art lasts forever, so you should only put out what you think deserves to last forever. I don’t want to rush anything, but I’m hoping it’s a couple more singles before I start working on a killer EP. Going on tour has been the dream since 9th grade, but right now my priority is 100% on getting better at production and finding ways to stand out.
