Trap Music is weird. So when What So Not co-released their new ‘The Quack EP‘ with OWSLA & Sweat It Out, you could guess that weirdness what going to a high point. The group has written their own bio about the meaning behind their songs. My personal favorite has to be ‘High You Are:‘ sweet and sentimental parts with dirty parts smashed together!

Skrillex Drops New Mini-Documentary: ‘Skrillex In Mexico’

Back in December of 2012, Skrillex was in the midst of the ‘ Mothership Tour‘ and filmed his experience in the lower Americas: Mexico baby. Mexico, and especially Mexico City, has a rapidly rising EDM scene that’s not only underrated but under-publicized. This 14-minute mini-documentary goes deep inside the experience Soony Moore had in EDM crazed country. Other artists featured are Zedd, 12th Planet and Nadastrom.

As soon as this track touched my ears, all I heard was gold. The track takes off into a trippy looped vocoder intro and becomes this smooth electro euphoria before you know it. The same film company who brought you Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” & Katy Perry’s “Part of Me,” both in-depth artist documentaries, is working with Insomniac to bring you a new EDC film from the the fans perspective.

Insomniac is the leading power in American EDM culture, it’s no surprise that they’d but a spin on their post-festival films. Here’s the big twist: since this film is the fans point of view. Your EDC Las Vegas group can apply to be the ones whose journey is filmed. Just apply here to be a considered for this experience.

The film will also go in-depth with what goes into Electric Daisy Carnival, feauting interviews with the Insomniac team and behind-the-scene film. I think my favorite comment on this song is “Jesus God!” ahaha. That expression of mind-blownness is not overstated either. Seven Lions, the Santa Barbra based dubstep-trance group has a very unique sound in which no artist has even come close to achieving or mimicking. Zeke & Zoid – Trap Music + EXCLUSIVE FIRST INTERVIEW

I have been following Zeke & Zoid for sometime now and for good reason. The Texas duo are in their musical beginning but have alot to offer. Their SoundCloud features several bold sounding trap tracks. A dark, grimy sound, some including some sexy lady vocals that’ll makes one imagine life in the trap house.

The two took some time out to let Brainless Beats take their interview virginity. Feels good to be first. We talk about their EDM beginnings, trap culture and future plans for Zeke & Zoid. Check it out below.

Chad : Starting off how did you guys get into EDM music?

Zoid: For me I was invited into it. I was asked to go to my first local rave when I was 15 and instantly fell in love.

Zeke: I started off listening to a lot of dubstep when it was barely coming out and i always wanted to learn how to make it or anything electronic.

Chad: So now the two of you are making trap, how did you get introduced to trap culture?

Zoid: I grew up and listened to 90′s rap until I was 15 so music for me has always been appealing with hip hop influence. So when trap came on the scene it was like the best of both worlds. Well it is the best of both words.

Zeke: Ive always loved hip hop music, and the fact that hip hop and electronic music were merging into one genre just amazed me, and since i was into dubstep for a long time, it made me lean more towards the electronic side of trap music.

Chad: I would describe your styles, as far as Zeke&Zoid goes, as dark trap

how did you develop your sound?

Zoid: That’s actually what we said that it was a dark sound. Our sound has really come from us just really trying to keep the electronic sounds in trap we really didn’t want to stray away from real trap roots where electronic sound were still a big part of it not just a simple drum pattern, brass, and a 2chainz sample. We wanted to develop something that people could hear and know its us and it’s real EDM.

Zeke: Me and zoid just try to make the filthiest drops we can and i wouldnt call it DARK, our sound is just FILTHY/ GRIMEY TRAP in my opinion. Zoid did make a good point though, we like keeping our sound unique.

Chad: I heard in one of your songs you had a sexy lady voice saying ‘Zeke & Zoid’ does she work with you two as well?

Zeke: haha YES shes a good friend of Zoids & she did vocals for our ‘SU&FM’ track

Chad: Wasn’t sure if that was some kind of automation program or not lol, sounds great tho

I felt like I was da trap house lol

Zoid: Haha!

Chad: So i feel like you two as a duo is the future, whats the next step?

Zoid: Thank you. We want to be that and try to maintain and good true trap sound to maybe keep the genre around longer than planned. Our next step is getting in front of the right crowd and absolutely melt them. Or get our music heard by the right person and start doing this as a job,

Zeke: We’re starting to experiment with other genres right now. Our latest track “Zs Anthem” was a festival Trap/House track and we have more of that coming.

EDM Sauce: For those out there who aren’t familiar with your music, please describe your style.

Savoy: Our style covers a lot of genres and tempos because variation gives our live shows more energy and excitement. We think it’s really important to have melodic breaks with warm analogue sounding synths and real instrumentation. Then we create contrast by dropping into something loud and dirty. There is an arena rock undertone that ties all these elements together so the whole thing feels real.

EDM Sauce: How did you three originally know each other and get together? What got you into the music scene?

Savoy: We are from all parts of the country, but the three of us met in college in Boulder, Colorado. We just randomly found each other and were all looking to collaborate and make music. It’s always difficult to find a group of people that are serious about putting in the time and making the commitment together. But we worked on music for several hours a day in this dingy shed, and over time our musical tastes converged and grew into the vision that Savoy has today. But it’s always changing.

EDM Sauce: Your tracks bring something different and aren’t just your normal everyday house music. What’s your inspiration? And what are you trying to achieve through your music?

Savoy: Most electronic music lacks strong identity and emotional depth. That was fine for a long time because that was the point. But after awhile the sounds and the format got old which made the genre a little stale. So we borrow sounds and influences from outside of dance music, which gives us a unique sound. In our new EP “Three Against Nature” we played and layered a lot of guitars and organic drums. When you put a distorted guitar chord over a dirty analogue synth stab, it really makes it sound like Queen or something. Our raw sound is something that really sets us apart. The live drums at our shows help tie in all those sonic layers making Savoy Live a unique experience.

EDM Sauce: You guys have been killing it lately, planning several Live with Lasers Tours, headlining at Red Rock Amphitheater, what do you think of all this success?

Savoy: The success we have achieved has all been really exciting but it is also relative. It’s a very gradual process so sometimes you have to remind yourself to really enjoy the special moments. At the same time, we realize that we could do a lot more so we are in no position to relax and start slacking.

EDM Sauce: What’s life like on tour/on the road? What’s your favorite part?

Savoy: The most fulfilling part of touring is seeing the reaction of so many crowds across the country. Our shows are very high energy and the lasers take it to the next level. People are loosing their shit out there. Constantly being on the move could be exhausting but it’s a lot of fun if you like partying.

EDM Sauce: What has been your favorite show you’ve played so far? Why?

Savoy: Playing at Red Rocks is the best. Our Colorado fans are the craziest and the venue is legendary. San Fran is the unofficial sister city of Boulder, Colorado so it gets pretty nuts there too. [Join the craziness at Slim’s in San Francisco on May 17, 2013].

EDM Sauce: What can fans look forward to? What’s coming up next?

Savoy: We are really excited about the release of our new EP “Three Against Nature”. It has a lot of musical qualities that give it the depth and character that most electronic music today is lacking. In the breakdowns there are a lot of classic old school synths that you would hear in 70s music or old house records. There are also catchy vocal melodies and vocoders that really keep the music personal. These nostalgic sounds can evoke emotion and remind you of another time. But the drops are in classic Savoy style. All the basses are huge and will get the dance floor moving pretty frantically. The blend between the listenable breaks and the club friendly drop is something that we always loved and it really shows in this EP. We also really look forward to our upcoming live tour which will have a lot of new music in there. Playing our new songs and changing up the set is always fun, especially with the lasers.

EDM Sauce: When you’re not listening to electronic music, you’re listening to..?

Savoy: We listen to a variety of stuff. My gym playlist is something like Eric Prydz, Etta James, Steely Dan, Gesaffelstein, Gladiator Soundtrack

EDM Sauce: What are you guys doing when you’re not in the studio?

Savoy: When we aren’t in the studio we are probably outside playing golf or out on a boat wakeboarding or fishing. Gray might be a few hundred feet up a rock face somewhere.

EDM Sauce: Any tips for aspiring artists?

Savoy: Listen to a variety of music because your favorite producer probably has a lot of influences other than himself. A variety of styles and sounds will inevitably give your music a special identity. That is the most important thing an artist can achieve.
